Bugey Montagnieu Brut NV

60% Mondeuse/30% Altesse/10% Chardonnay. Methode champenoise sparkling wine from the AOC of Bugey, specifically in the cru of Montagnieu in southern Bugey. Most Montagnieu sparkling is Chardonnay-dominant, but the Peillot family's has always featured Mondeuse and Altesse with a small percentag of Chard. Peillot's average vine age is around 30 years, with some plots up to 60 years old, planted mainly on rocky limestone scree on a steep slope. The farming is organic. The bunches are harvested by hand and vinified separately by variety and parcel. The clusters are direct-pressed and spontaneously fermented in tank; the blending takes place in late winter. The wine is bottled with a liqueur di tirage for re-fermentation. It is aged up to two years sur lattes and then disgorged and finished with a small dosage. In the past, Peillot has made single-vintage (though not labeled as such) sparkling wines, but it is now a vintage blend.
