IGT Terre Siciliane Rosso "Quota N"

50% Nerello Mascalese/30% Grenache/20% Grecanico-Carricante-Coda di Volpe. "Quota N" comes from a half-hectare parcel of ungrafted (hence piedi franco on label), mixed-variety alberello vines in the contrada of Nave on the north face of Mt. Etna. Restoring this neglected plot of fragile, 80-100-year-old bushes has been a labor of love. The farming is now fully organic. The vineyard features very rocky, sandy volcanic soils and lies high up at 1070 meters (too high for the contrada name, Nave, to be permitted on the label).
The bunches are hand-harvested, vinified as a mix of whole clusters and destemmed berries, co-fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and without sulfur or temperature control in concrete tank. Maceration lasts around 15 days. The wine is aged for 9 months in concrete tank with minimal racking. It is bottled without fining or filtration and with a tiny amount of sulfur.
