Les Pierrières Blanc des Blancs (2017 base)

Champagne

100% Chardonnay. 40% 2017 base & 60% reserve wines. Les Pierrières is a 1.2-hectare monopole in Vert-Toulon, the next village over from Collin's home village of Congy, in the Coteaux du Petit Morin. The southeastern-facing plot features vines averaging 40 years old and chalky soils that also feature chunks and pockets of a rare black flint or silex noir unique to the Coteaux du Petit Morin. Pierrières was Olivier Collin's first bottling, and only bottling, in the 2004 vintage, albeit without the name of the site on the label at that time. As for all Collin Champagnes, the fruit is hand-harvested, the clusters destemmed and the grapes gently pressed; the juice is fermented spontaneously and slowly (up to six months) with natural yeasts in mainly-used Burgundy barrels; reserve wines are held in foudres and tonneaux. The wine is bottled without fining or filtering and aged sur lattes for an extended period, 3 years in the case of Les Pierrières. The wine is disgorged and finished with a dosage of 1-2 grams/liter at most.

"The NV Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Les Pierrières (2016 base) is the wine that, to me, really shows Olivier Collin's style off to its greatest effect. Finely cut and chiseled, with striking energy, the Pierrières offers a taut expression of Chardonnay that provides a lovely contrast to the more supple Les Roises. Crushed rocks, lemon confit, almond, dried flowers. The purity and saline-infused energy of the flavors is just brilliant. Disgorged: March 1, 2020."
