Morgon Javernières "Aux Pierres"

France
Beaujolais
2023

100% Gamay. 2020 was the first vintage from a new Desvignes parcel in the historic lieu-dit of Javernières at the foot of the famous Côte du Py hill. "Aux Pierres" comes from a 0.57-hectare plot of 90-year-old vines on a steep, east-facing slope. The soils are iron-rich, red clay with schist, pyrite and blue granite. The farming is certified- organic and harvest is by hand. Generally around half of the bunches are left whole with half destemmed and put together into closed concrete vats for a partly carbonic fermentation; maceration is 13-14 days with a submerged cap and no punchdowns. A very small amount of sulfur is added after malo (and sometimes at bottling). The wine is aged in a 30-hectoliter concrete egg for 10 months and bottled with a light, non-sterile filtration. The Desvignes family considers "Aux Pierres" to be a true vin de garde.

"The Morgon “aux Pierres Javernières” bottling is made from ninety-three year-old vines situated at the foot of the Côte du Py. The wine includes about half whole clusters and is raised in concrete egg. The 2023 version is the ripest of these 2023s that I tasted from the domaine, coming in at 14.5 percent octane. However, it offers up great purity and precision on the nose, wafting from the glass in a mix of black cherries, sweet dark berries, espresso, a beautiful base of dark soil tones, a touch of meatiness, bonfire and a topnote of fresh thyme. On the palate the wine is fullbodied, ripe, complex and rock solid at the core, with fine soil signature and grip, ripe, wellintegrated tannins, fine focus and grip and just a wisp of heat on the long and well balanced finish. This is a properly structured young Morgon and is going to need plenty of bottle age to soften up, but it is going to be a fine wine once it is ready to drink. 2035-2075+. "
