Vijariego Negro

Spain
Canary Islands
2023

The Vijariego Negro, the red variant of the more widely-planted white grape Viajriego Blanco was founded on the island of El Hierro--recuperated by Juan Jesus himself. Now, grapes for this cuvee are grown at the Laderas de Teno plot which is in a secluded area of La Guacha (northwest Tenerife). Soils here are volcanic and the climate is cool due to the high elevation (800m) and trade winds. Fermented and macerated (10 days) in stainless steel tanks with indigenous. Aged in used French oak for 14 months.

"The 2023 Vijariego Negro bottling from Viñátigo is another fine wine in the making. This windswept vineyard sits high up on the side of a volcano. The wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks and aged for fourteen months in older French oak casks. The 2023 comes in at an even thirteen percent alcohol. It offers up a fine, black fruity nose of dark berries, cassis, espresso, sweet botanicals, volcanic minerality, tree bark, distant bonfire and a deft touch of cedary oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused, tangy and shows off a superb core of fruit, a superb base of minerality, fine-grained tannins and a long, precise and complex finish. Fine juice. 2032-2065."
