Morillon (Chardonnay) Sudsteiermark "Muschelkalk"

Austria
Styria
2023

Morillon is the local name in Styria for Chardonnay. The “Muschelkalk” Morillon is a regional wine that comes entirely from Sudsteiermark vineyards. It’s predominantly grown on coralline limestone soil, or Muschelkalk in German. After natural fermentation, the wine is aged for 18 months on the lees in big, neutral oak casks. Bottled unfiltered.

"From vines up to 41 years old, Tement's 2023 Muschelkalk Morillon was vinified for 15 months in large oak vats and is still a young and fresh as well as savory and lemony-scented Chardonnay in the unmistakable Tement style. Still very young on the nose and with charming sur lie notes, this is a textured and elegant Morillon from limestone soils. Provided with fine oak tannins and flavors, this is a light to medium-bodied, pure, fresh and lemon-bitter as well as saline-finishing white with grip and stimulation yet not the sweetness and roundness of a classic "oaky" white. This is a pretty good gastronomic Chardonnay that is fine and elegant yet certainly not as complex as the crus of this Austrian icon producer."
