Nucano Mezcal
- Oaxaca, Mexico
The essence of the Nucano project is to represent the culture and traditions of the Mixtec community. Named after a prince and warrior of the Mixtec culture, Nucano means Fuego Grande (great fire). Mitla was their culture’s capital and today is an important archaeological site in Oaxaca, Mexico.
“The Mixtec culture flourished in the state of Oaxaca; it is part of the cultural roots and past of our communities. Nucano has meaning for us and is part of our history as a people.”
This 100% artisanal mezcal is created in the heart of Oaxaca by third- and fourth-generation Maestro Mezcaleros, Don Arturo and his daughter Esther. Handcrafted in small batches, with labels designed by local artists, it is entirely Oaxacan-owned and operated.
Hand-harvested in San Dionisio, the agave is roasted in a conical earth oven for five days before being pressed using a massive stone tahona pulled by a horse. The mash is then fermented in large wooden vats with pure mountain water and wild yeast. Finally, it is twice distilled in a small copper pot heated by a direct wood fire.
Nucano Mezcal sits at the crossroads of craft and culture, elegantly presented in a bottle.
