Barolo San Lorenzo di Verduno

Italy
Piedmont
2021

From the small Verduno cru of San Lorenzo (South exposure, 240-260m), where Fratelli Alessandria owns 0.8ha.   Average vine age of 30 years.  Harvest on October 8th.  Macerations 31 days.   First produced in 1997.  5,000 bottles made.

"The 2021 Barolo San Lorenzo di Verduno is a wine of translucence, elegance and finesse.  Bright acids cut through a core of red/purplish fruit, chalk, slate, crushed rocks and white pepper.  Rose petals, blood orange peel and mint resonate on the high-toned, intensely saline finish.  San Lorenzo is often a potent Barolo, but in 2021, in comes across as especially finessed." -Antonio Galloni, Vinous, January 2025

"The 2021 Barolo San Lorenzo Di Verduno is a medium red in color and has pretty aromatics that gain more depth with aromas of preserved raspberries, delicate notes of fresh leather, pressed flowers, and chalky earth. The palate is both approachable and refined, but the wine has structure to age and feels like it’s going to have a very wide window for enjoyment over the coming decades. A beautiful expression of this wine, the tannins are refined and the wine more seamless, accented with refreshing acidity and a long finish, and it’s very pure all the way through."

"This wine was introduced in 1997 and was the first single-vineyard expression from this MGA site. The Fratelli Alessandria 2021 Barolo San Lorenzo di Verduno (with 5,000 bottles created) has a sweet side with nutmeg and tobacco, but it also presents a solid core of cherry fruit and blackcurrant. This nicely balanced expression has more accessible tannins for medium-term drinking."

"Bright cherry, raspberry and strawberry fruit is at the center of this succulent red. A layer of dusty tannins lends support, and the finish adds menthol, mineral and spice accents. Shows fine harmony and length but needs time. "
