Fixin 1er Cru les Arvelets

France
Burgundy
2024

From the north, this is the very first 1er Cru vineyard in the Côte d’Or. In Fixin, there are only five premier crus and three of them are monopoles. There is very little top soil on crinoidal limestone and sandy marl. Berthaut owns just under one hectare, planted in 1956, 1960 and 1980. Fermented and aged for 18 months in barrel (approximately 30% new). 50% whole cluster.

Very limited.

"The 2024 Fixin Les Arvelets 1er Cru contains just over 50% whole cluster this year. That is apparent on the nose and is at the liminal point where they almost overwhelm the fruit underneath. We will have to wait to see how it shows after bottling. The palate is medium-bodied with quite saturated tannins, a touch of white pepper and clove, a little stemmy on the finish but on consideration there is sufficient fruit to absorb that with time."
