IGT Toscana "Pettirosso" (2023 + 2024)

Italy
Tuscany
NV

70% Sangiovese/30% Ciliegiolo. The current release marks the first time Pettirosso is a dual-vintage, thus technically a "non-vintage", blend, as a result of particular vintage circumstances. The 2023 was as usual a Ciliegiolo-Sangiovese mix from Fonterenza's Mt. Amiata vines (10 miles from the winery on sandy volcanic soils), but unusually, was vinified carbonically, with about 10 days of maceration. The 2024 was pure Sangiovese, in fact a pre-selection from Fonterenza's Brunello vineyard (Vigna del Bosco), destemmed and fermented spontaneously in cement with only 3 days of maceration. Aged in cement and bottled unfiltered. Pettirosso is classified simply as a Vino Rosso and is named for the red-breasted European robins in the vineyard.

"The NV Petti Rosso, a blend of the 2023 and 2024 vintages, opens with zesty notes of orange, licorice and sour cherries. It's remarkably fresh and energetic, with steely mineral tones and vividly ripe wild berry fruits. This leaves a sweet herbal air and nuances of spice on the crunchy, clean finish."
