Morillon (Chardonnay) Sudsteiermark "Muschelkalk"

Austria
Styria
2021

Morillon is the local name in Styria for Chardonnay. The "Muschelkalk" Morillon is a regional wine that comes entirely from Sudsteiermark vineyards. It's predominantly grown on coralline limestone soil, or  Muschelkalk in German. After natural fermentation, the wine is aged for 18 months on the lees in big, neutral oak casks. Bottled unfiltered.

Bright and balanced now, but even better after two-three years of bottle age.

"This is more green-fruited with notes of sliced green apples, herbs, flint and gooseberries. Medium-bodied, crisp and driven, with a sharp and mineral finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink now or hold. Glass stopper."

"The 2021 Morillon Muschelkalk is clear and precise on the nose that is bright and pure as well as intense and super ripe, even with partly overripe or pink-frost aromas. Elegant and fresh on the palate, this is a full-bodied, tight Chardonnay with a phenolic finish. It underwent up to six hours of maceration and was aged in large and one-third smaller oak barrels (pieces). Bottled unfiltered, it has serious Styrian grip. Released in April this year, this is a serious and age-worthy Morillon that needs some months to open up. 13% stated alcohol. Glass stopper. Tasted in May 2023."
