Régnié

Beaujolais
2023

100% Gamay. About 2 of Georges Descombes' 15 hectares of vines are in the Régnié cru; he also purchases a bit of Régnié fruit. There are two Régnié bottlings: one from the oldest vines and this one, from the younger vines, which range 5 up to almost 50 years old. All are planted on hilly sites of decomposed granite soils. The farming is organic, though not certified, and the harvest is manual. The vinification is traditional: whole-bunch, semi-carbonic maceration in large vats (cement, fiberglass, stainless steel) with native yeasts and no sulfur. The wine is aged in a mix of vat and large wood foudres for around a year, making Descombes' releases generally quite a bit later than those of his fellow vignerons. It is bottled with a very small amount of sulfur and a light, non-sterile filtration.

"The 2023 Régnié from Domaine Georges Descombes is a lovely and very red fruity example of this fine vintage. The wine is bright and complex on the nose, wafting from the glass in a mix of cherries, sweet cranberries, pigeon, a touch of orange peel, a fine base of soil, bonfire and a nice touch of whole clusters in the upper register. On the palate the wine is vibrant and fullbodied, with a good core of fruit, excellent soil signature, tangy acids, modest tannins and a long, complex and very nicely balanced finish. This is an excellent bottle of Régnié that will drink well from its outset and should age very nicely for the next decade. 2025-2035. "
