IGT Emilia Barbera "Camporomano"

Italy
Emilia-Romagna
2013

100% Barbera. The Camporomano parcel is planted with vines ranging from 20 to 45 years old. They grow on a hillside of heavy, silty, iron-rich clay soils. The farming is certified organic and includes no natural fertliizers or other soil enhancements, with wild plants growing among the vine rows. The bunches are harvested by hand, then destemmed and the berries gently crushed. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts and no sulfur; maceration lasts for up to 40 days. This one wine does not go through malolactic fermentation due to the particular combination of low pH and high acidity. The wine is aged in mix of used barriques and 40-hectoliter Slavonian oak tini. It is bottled without filtration or sulfur and aged in bottle for a minimum of 2 years--but in point of fact much, much longer normally, hence 2013 being the current release as of January 2025--before release.

"Dark earth and wood tones give way to mint-laced cherries and hints of tobacco as the 2013 Camporomano smolders up from the glass. This is more lifted and finessed than expected, showing its minerality up front as tart wild berries cascade throughout. Almost salty and a bit wiry in feel, the 2013 tapers off potent and long with a cheek-puckering tartness that doesn’t relent. This clearly shows the compact nature of the vintage."
