Rosso di Montalcino

100% Sangiovese. Fonterenza's classic Rosso di Montalcino comes from across their hilly, contiguous four hectares of vines in San Polo, just southeast of Montalcino. It has never been a "second wine" for them. Their entire small holding qualifies for Brunello DOCG technically, but the legal constraints on Brunello production were very tight when the Padovani sisters started in the late 1990s. Only one hectare's worth can be used for Brunello, so the rest of their fruit goes mainly into their Rosso. The parcels comprise a diverse patchwork of crumbly marl and schistous clay soils and face mainly north at 420-450 meters.
The farming is meticulous, organic from the start and certified biodynamic for years now. The bunches are harvested, destemmed, gently pressed and fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and a small amount of sulfur in open-top oak vats without temperature control. The maceration is around 5-15 days depending on the vintage. The wine is aged in Slavonian oak for about two years (one year and no wood required by DOC regulation) and bottled unfiltered.
