Champagne "Les Romaines" Premier Cru Extra Brut

France
Champagne
2011

100% Meunier from Ville-Dommange in the Petite Montagne. Aged for 12 - 18 months in neutral oak. Sandy soils in Ville-Dommange offer better drainage, creating a more delicate expression of Meunier, and slow aging in neutral oak barrels adds richness to a spicy, linear profile. A treat for any Meunier enthusiast.

"The single vineyard bottling of les Romaines from Hugues Godmé is made entirely from pinot meunier, with these vines located in the hamlet of Ville-Dommange on the Petite Montagne de Reims. The vins clairs here are barrel-fermented with indigenous yeasts and raised for a year in cask prior to bottling for secondary fermentation. It was aged on its fine lees for just over nine years prior to its disgorgement and in January of 2022 and is non-dosé. The wine’s bouquet is exquisite, offering up scents of apple, warm bread, sweet pecan, chalky soil tones, incipient smokiness, just a whisper of oak and a lovely potpourri of dried meunier floral tones. On the palate the wine is crisp, complex and full-bodied, with a fine core of fruit, excellent mineral undertow, refined mousse, lovely focus and grip and a long, impeccably balanced and classy finish. This is an excellent wine that is still fairly youthful and will be even a better drink with a bit more bottle age."

"Although lacking a bit of length on the finish, this appeals for its well-balanced mesh of baked black currant, preserved lemon, toasted raisin bread, beeswax and chopped almond flavors, all set on a zesty bead and framed by firm, mouthwatering acidity. A fine effort in a challenging vintage."
